Infrared Camera/Thermal Imaging Inspections
There are many types of equipment used to evaluate water damage. However, the
infrared thermal imaging camera (also known as a thermal imager) seems to capture the most interest.
The thermal imaging camera is a very effective way of showing the homeowner, insurance adjuster and water damage technician what structures are wet. This is especially useful when water has saturated structures in ceilings and walls and nothing appears wet to the naked eye of the homeowner. The camera reveals moisture as “hot spots” on the display. Hot spots are areas that are saturated with water that conduct and store heat better than areas not affected by water.
The camera documents the drying process by capturing and storing images that are downloaded into the customers file. The thermal images; along with readings taken and documented from other moisture measuring instruments that detect water in sub-floors, carpets, and walls, are used to demonstrate that a structure is indeed dry.
Identifying the Source:
When dealing with odor the key to remember is that odor is the sensation of smell that is transmitted from the nose to the brain. The nose is the best equipment available to detect odor. Once the odor has been detected a combination of techniques will be utilized to complete the job successfully. Odor Removal is typically obtained by removing as much of the source as possible. Most of the time this step works and the odor will dissipate. In other tough to solve odor issues the source may be hard to detect. In these cases Elements Disaster Recovery recommends having one of our certified odor technicians visit the site and perform an odor inspection or start treatment for odor removal immediately.
Source of Odor:
Odor can be present for a number of reasons. Some of the many different types of odors Elements Disaster Recovery has encountered are due to: Water Damage, Sewage Damage, Smoke Damage, Fire Damage, Pets, Mold, Decaying Animals, and etc... Each odor is unique and has to be addressed according to the type of odor present. Once the source is detected the proper deodorization techniques can be started and the odor removed.
The basic steps of deodorization entail the following: Removal of the source of contamination, clean the area thoroughly, recreate the conditions of odor penetration, and seal the area if necessary. Removal and cleaning are first then it's time to recreate the conditions of odor penetration. Thermal Fogging is one technique frequently used. It consist of emitting a vaporized gas into the air to act as a perfume and helps to neutralize the odor molecule. Use of an Ozone Machine is another frequently used technique utilized to neutralize odor. An ozone machine puts off gas that reacts with odor molecules, giving off an extra oxygen atom and oxidizing these molecules, eliminating the bad smell. While these techniques are the most common others are also used to eliminate and fight tough odors. After the odor has dissipated we seal the source if possible with some type of sealer to keep the odor if any is remaining from emitting. In most cases when the odor is no longer detectable by the nose for over a 24 hour period it is considered removed.
Note: It is important to reiterate that each odor removal process varies from one to the other. In some cases an odor will dissipate immediately after certain techniques are performed. In other cases the odor may linger and require additional steps to effectively remove the odor. The nose is our only tool for detection of an odor and removal of the source is the most effective technique. We start with simple techniques and move up tospecial techniques if the odor persist.
